Scope and Content Grave-slab, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This graveslab was formerly in Reilig Odhrain. There is a ship with furled sail and animal figure heads in the middle. To the right, a hound chases another animal, and there are four animals below. The rest of the panel is filled with plant-scrolls. The carving style belongs to what is known as the Iona school. The slab is now in the Abbey Museum (No 85). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
