Scope and Content Grave-slab, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This tapering graveslab was formerly in Reilig Odhrain. This view shows a detail from the carved decoration. The upper panel has a horseman followed by a dog, and what appears to be a harpist in a boat. Below are two pairs of animals and plant-scrolls. The graveslab has the inscription + HIC IACET [NICOLAUS] (Here lies Nicholas). The carving style belongs to what is known as the Iona school. The slab is now in the Abbey Museum (No 75).
