Scope and Content Grave-slab, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This graveslab was formerly in Reilig Odhrain. It is a tapering slab with bevelled edges, and is carved with a long-shafted ringed-cross formed from a pair of plaited strands. Set vertically on the left is a boat and on the right, a sword. The carving style probably belongs to what is known as the Iona school. The slab is now in the Abbey Museum (No 57).
