Scope and Content Architectural fragment from Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This drawing is of part of an arch. It is decorated with a distinctive stepped chevron-pattern and palm leaf-like foliage. No other similar designs are known on Iona, but the design is common on other British and Irish sites of similar age. During the excavation, restoration and rebuilding of the Abbey, numerous architectural fragments were unearthed. Some of these were reused in the rebuilding. Many others are on display in the Abbey Museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
