Scope and Content View of Forth Bridge from south The Forth Railway Bridge was built in 1882-90 by Sir John Fowler and Benjamin Baker after Thomas Bouch lost the original contract in 1879 when his Tay Bridge collapsed. The massive structure was intended to prevent a similar disaster. This view shows the full length of the bridge, consisting of three cantilevers. Each arm of the cantilevers is extended at the same rate so as to maintain the balance of the structure. The approach spans are supported on stone piers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
