Scope and Content Architectural fragment from Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This double column base has been broken into two fragments. The remains of two animals, probably dogs or lions, confront each other. The stone was possibly originally from the cloister-arcade, as it is roughly the same size as other bases from there. During the excavation, restoration and rebuilding of the Abbey, numerous architectural fragments were unearthed. Some of these were reused in the rebuilding.
