Scope and Content Church at Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This is a view of the restored church with the choir and S choir-aisle, and the E wall of the S transept. The choir aisle runs for 15.0 m along the side of the choir. The presbytery accounts for the remaining 5.2 m of this end of the church. The S and E walls of the choir, S choir-aisle and S transept all date from the 15th century. Much of the S side of the church was rebuilt when it was decided to widen the nave and choir. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
