Scope and Content 19th-century drawing of proposed alterations to the New Barracks at Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh Edinburgh Castle, former fortress and palace of the kings of Scotland, dates from the 12th century. It stands turreted and battlemented on a precipitous crag in a commanding and almost impregnable situation overlooking the city. This shows the proposed designs by Francis T Dollman in 1859 for the re-casting of the Georgian New Barracks and the Munitions House and Ordinance Stores in a picturesque style more like a French chateau than a Scottish castle. The massive Georgian New Barracks, completed in 1799, dominates the west side of the crag, and had been considered for years as being out of keeping with the historic character of the castle. In the 1850s plans were put forward to restore the Barracks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
