Scope and Content Fort and temporary camps at Glenlochar, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fort is at Glenlochar. It is built on the E side of the river Dee and its location gives it a strategic importance. There appears to be more than one phase of building at the site. There are at least four temporary camps nearby. This is an aerial view of the site. The S and W sides can be clearly seen as crop marks, as can some of the internal roads. The S gateway is visible as a gap on the right side of the fort. The defences consisted of ramparts and ditches. The site was discovered via aerial photography in 1949. Local tradition believed an abbey had stood on the site. It was excavated in 1952. The first occupation was during the 1st century AD. The site was burnt down and reoccupied in the mid 2nd century.
