Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of house 9. The layout can clearly be seen here, with the central hearth and bed made out of stone slabs. In the back wall is a cell. These were built into the walls of a number of the houses.
