Scope and Content Broch of Midhowe, Rousay The broch of Midhowe is built on a small promontory. The outer defences are confined to the landward side. A sea wall was built during the 1930s to put an end to the erosion which had destroyed part of the west side of the site. This is the ground plan. Originally, the broch probably consisted of the tower and its defences. The defences consisted of a huge stone built wall with an inner and an outer ditch. The other buildings were added later. Many finds from the site are now in the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, with metalwork, jewellery and a number of bone and stone tools. A Roman bronze ladle was probably acquired through trading or raiding and not by direct contact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
