Scope and Content Plans of Stranraer Castle, Dumfries and Galloway Stranraer Castle was bought by the town council in 1815. In 1820 the Commissioners of Supply accepted the plans to convert it to a jail. A new prison replaced it in 1847, but it was still used as an occasional lock-up until 1907. The jail was intended to be 'secure and salutary' with cells on the top two floors and a ground-floor lock-up. The cells are vaulted and have strengthened walls wherever there are chimney-flues. Original iron-plated doors and graffiti survive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
