Scope and Content Settlement at Ardnave, Islay, Argyll and Bute This prehistoric house is at Ardnave on Islay. It is built in a hollow on a sand-hill. A smaller house was later built within the interior. The structure was then covered in a layer of blown sand, preserving the remains. This is a view of the house. The hollow in the sand had been lined with drystone walling. Post holes showed where the roof supports were - it was probably a lightweight roof of skins. There was a central hearth and a pit in front contained pottery. The site has been excavated. As well as a complete Food Vessel and other pottery, finds included flint and stone tools, animal bones including sheep and red deer, fish bones, shellfish and crab. There was also evidence for the cultivation of barley. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
