Scope and Content Broch at Midhowe, Rousay, Orkney The Broch of Midhowe on Rousay is built on a small promontory. The outer defences are confined to the landward side. A sea wall was built during the 1930s to put an end to the erosion which had destroyed part of the W side of the site. This is a view of one of the domestic buildings beside the broch. It is constructed out of stone slabs and drystone walling. Several storage niches have been built into the walls. Some of these houses are built over the remains of the outer defences. Many finds from the site are now in the Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, with metalwork, jewellery and a number of bone and stone tools. A Roman bronze ladle was probably acquired through trading or raiding and not by direct contact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
