Scope and Content Late 19th century view of Dumfries Town-house ('Midsteeple'), Dumfries and Galloway Dumfries Town-house was built to provide much-needed office and prison space. There had been outcry over the way the burgh had handled a windfall of customs revenue so a committee of council and community oversaw the construction of the town-house. At some point the Town-house became a police superintendent's residence with shops and a cell on the ground floor. Then in 1866 when a new town hall was built, it was turned over to shops and warehouses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
