Scope and Content Broch of Burrian, Orkney The Broch of Burrian stands on the shore at the S tip of North Ronaldsay. The remains have been eroded by the sea and have also been incorporated into the sheep dyke. On the landward side traces of defensive ramparts can be seen. This plan shows the layout of the broch. The remains of the four ramparts can be seen to the NW of the building. Inside, one cell survives at ground floor level. There is also an underground well or storage area. The site was excavated during the 1870s. Most of the finds were from the Iron Age and Pictish times. A large number of animal bones, including pig, dog, horse and cattle, were also found.
