Drawing showing masons' marks from the tower of St Mary's Church, Dundee.

DP 238881

Description Drawing showing masons' marks from the tower of St Mary's Church, Dundee.

Date c. 1857 to 1861

Collection Records of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 238881

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 53763/3/2

Scope and Content Ink drawings annotated 'Mason marks on the Tower of St Mary's church, Dundee - all the above marks are repeated, more particularly the one marked x indeed it is the prevailing mark. As some are of the opinion that the "pent-house" or building upon the top of the tower of St Mary's is of a later date than the tower itself, you will observe from the following marks, which are upon the upper part of the building that with two exceptions, some of them are exactly the same as those upon the lower portion , which shews (at least I am inclined to think so) that the same hewers were employed upon the upper as well as upon the lower portions - and that the whole structure belongs to the same period, possibly 1330-70. (S.Memorials of Angus & Mearns P 179)'. The drawing is in two parts, DC 53763/3/1-2.
